Community day to Honouring Sunderland’s Forgotten Heroes

URC Roker – Side Cliff Rd, Roker, Sunderland SR6 9JP –

Saturday 14th March – 10am to 5pm

On the 14th we start the long journey to create a fitting memorial to those from Sunderland who fought the rise of fascism in the 1930s, many of whom gave everything in the Spanish Civil War.

Solidarity Sunderland is about community. While at our first event we will be collectively carving cobbles that will form the base of our future monument, there will also be lots of activities for families and kids:

  • Just Let Your Soul Grow—an award-winning community garden and educational project in Sunderland—you can decorate an eggshell and plant some seeds to take away.
  • Help make a community banner! Paint, write, leave your mark, and learn about the upcoming Carnival House events in Sunderland. You might even want to think about joining future parades in the city!
  • Local author Jamie Tucknutt will be chatting about the history of Sunderland’s forgotten heroes and the ships of the Spanish Civil War at the history hub display.
  • There will also be live music featuring local talent Ron Brown and Sarah Denis.
  • Find out about the important work of supporting refugee families in the city with FODI
  • Other tables and lots of other children’s activities are planned.

So come along and join us! To book a space for stone carving, email us at SolidaritySunderland@gmail.com.
