The solidarity park project has now been running for over 5 years. It’s been a long journey since the first meeting of historians/activists from Malgrat and Artist Rob MacDonald in the spring of 2014. We knew then to create the monument to the sinking of the Ciudad de Barcelona and the necessary recovery of the historic memory needed it was going to be a big task.
From the first moment we knew it should be something that should involve people locally and internationally and that we had to explain the history to a new generation. We choose the idea of a community participation monument that would have a strong cultural element. We are pleased we have achieved so much. The backbone of the project is of course the monument itself.
The first part was built by the community. We raised the money from crowd funding then we carved the central figures of the monument on the street, at festivals, at events and of course in the workshops. The 60 Figures are now complete.
The basic world map is finished which forms a patio in front of the main monument, as is the Brigadista star which sits upon the monument itself. The stone for the wave bench is awaiting the end of the corona virus to be finished. The stone for cladding the monument is ordered and at the quarry. Also complete is a stone Information point and a seat.
The first community porthole has been completed designed by Destiny Omoregie a student from Germany (see main image of this article) which was chosen from a short list by local historian Josep-Maria. The student project will continue and new designs will shortly be announced. It is planned that portholes will be added for years to come and can form the backbone of the continuation of the Solidarity Park student project.
The foundations of the monument is the job of the local council and they have agreed a budget, paid the project design architect. Just prior to Corna virus lockdown they were due to choose a contractor and begin foundation works. Once these are done Rob will fit the stone artwork. The plan date for completion is the end of 2020/ early 2021. So will hope to have an inauguration May 30th May 2021 of the finish monument. The 84th Anniversary.
Solidarity Park though has become more than a stone monument. There was big plans for the 83rd Anniversary to have an art and cultural festival over 3 days. This was designed to complete another of our plans to bring the International community back to Malgrat de Mar. This festival will now go online due to corona virus. We hope the opening event in 2021 will also be a festival of International solidarity and bring the people together to remember the importance memory of the International brigades and be something of a focus for years to come.
Soon there will be a new video about the story of Solidarity Park

We still need donations to complete the community and cultural elements of the project so please make a donation if you can.
