Programme Solidarity Park Festival, 30 May – 1 June 2025

This year the Solidarity Park festival commemorates the 88th anniversary of the sinking of the Ciudad de Barcelona, which in May 1937 was bringing hundreds of International Brigaders to Spain to fight against fascism.

Below, you will find the venues and times for all the festival activities. Remember you need to register in the links or emails provided to take part in the communal lunch, the tours and the choir workshop.

Students activity day
Secondary schools come together to commemorate the 88th anniversary of the sinking of the Ciudad de Barcelona. Students from schools taking part in the Solidarity Park educational project will be meeting up to share their work and do some “historical memory” activities together. The schools participating and/or collaborating in the organisation of the project and the day: INS Ramon Turró, Escoles Fonlladosa, Escola Vedruna, INS Lluís Companys (Todera) and Hull School of Art (UK)

Historical memory associations’ market
You’ll be able to visit the stalls of various associations and some artists, get to know their projects and choose something from their merchandising. At the Solidarity Park stall, you’ll be able to buy books, T-shirts and baseball caps, as well as help to fund the festival and join the association at the same time.

From the Archives to the castle –
Historical route: “The Civil War in Malgrat and the defense of the coast”
A tour with a historical recreation to learn about what happened during the Civil War in Malgrat and how the defence of the coast was organised, starting in the church square.
Organised by the historical recreation group XV Brigada Mixta, in collaboration with the historical recreation and dissemination group UDEP (Última Defensa El Pont), historian Sònia Garangou and Joan Garcia, from the historical research and dissemination page La Selva 1936.

Infermeres en guerra (Nurses at war)
Historian Alfonso López Borgoñoz in conversation with the author, Maria Cinta, about her book on the experiences of nurses from different countries who passed through the Vic Hospital for wounded international brigaders in 1938-39, shedding more light on the vital but still little known role of women in the Civil War.

Inauguration of new student portholes designs.
Viewing of the 4 new portholes sculpted on the Solidarity Park Monument. The designs of these new pieces were chosen in a competition held in 2024 from among the drawings done by students participating in the education project.
During the ceremony there will be flower laying and speeches by students, local dignitaries and the monument creator Rob MacDonald.
